Why deaf dating matters

Let me bring in a bit of personal history here.  When I was a youngster an older cousin of mine  had a baby who it turned out was born profoundly deaf.  They didn't realise anything was untoward for quite a while.  In fact the family just assumed he was a good sleeper since ambient noise did not seem to wake him.  I remember the shock my cousin and his wife had when they realised that he was deaf.

This was back in the late 1950's and the world was very different from the way it is now and any sort of disability was more of a challenge than we can imagine today.  The years passed and I saw very little of that side of my family but I heard that the baby had grown into a young man doing well in his studies.  The next time I saw him was at his engagement party and he was a handsome young man with a very beautiful partner who was also deaf  I was impressed with how well he could speak and of course his lip reading was perfect.  They made a charming couple, obviously happy together and their disability something they dealt with very elegantly.  The last I heard was that they married and had a baby who was also born deaf.  This experience made me aware of the ongoing needs of the deaf community and how best for deaf single men and women to meet and find happiness together.

It was with this in mind that I created a website www.disabilitymatch.co.ukwww.disabilitymatch.co.uk which is designed to help many different groups of disabled singles to find romance - deaf dating is an integral part of that process.   This blog will focus on the deaf community and their specific dating needs and I hope to write regularly on this subject.
